The CCP Met Opera in HD continues its season offering with the special screening of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata on November 15, 5:30 p.m., at Greenbelt 3, Ayala Malls Cinemas in Makati City.
An opera in three acts with libretto in Italian by Francesco Maria Piave, La Traviata narrates the story of the star-crossed lovers, courtesan Violetta and gentleman Alfredo Germont. Set in 1850 Paris, their love plays out amid the hypocrisy of upper-class fashionable society.
Their love turns tragic when Alfredo’s father appeals to Violetta to leave his son for the sake of his young daughter, who is about to marry a respectable man. The courtesan relinquishes her chance for happiness and leaves Alfredo. Where will her self-sacrifice lead their love?
Featuring a dazzling 18th-century setting that changes with the seasons, in this opera screening, soprano Diana Damrau plays the tragic heroine Violetta, and tenor Juan Diego Flórez to sing Alfredo, Violetta’s hapless lover. Baritone Quinn Kelsey is Alfredo’s father, Germont, who destroys their love.
Premiered in Venice at La Fenice opera house on March 6, 1853, the Italian opera is known for its challenging soprano repertoire, including the aria “Sempre libera.”
