Creative Non-fiction: Between Books and Fine Art Printmaking, an exhibition exploring the intersection of literature and printmaking, opens this Saturday, March 8, 2025, International Women’s Day, at Everything’s Fine Bookstore in Makati. The exhibition runs alongside a special bookstore curation, where only works by Filipina authors will be on display.
Organized by Hanan Initiative, a young collective of women printmakers, Creative Non-fiction brings together works by 15 women printmakers, each responding to the themes of love, womanhood, and intimacy found in Katrina Stuart Santiago’s Of Love and Other Lemons and Zea Asis’ Strange Intimacies.
The exhibition features works by Marz Aglipay, Mitzi Aguilar-Reyes, Melai Arguzon, Diana Aviado, Kristen Cain, Villa Jefremovas, Irma Lacorte, Annatha Lilo, Carmel Lim-Torres, Fara Manuel, Gabi Nazareno, Tin Palattao, Angela Silva & France Daffon (in collaboration), Suchin Teoh, and Josephine Turalba.

Experimental Print Techniques and Ex Libris
The printmakers respond through experimental printmaking techniques and Ex Libris (bookplates).
Experimental printmaking goes beyond traditional methods, incorporating collage, mixed-media printing, monoprints, cyanotype, and alternative etching processes. This approach allows artists to push the boundaries of print as a storytelling medium, embracing spontaneity and chance as key elements of their works.

Additionally, the exhibit features Ex Libris, or bookplates—small, intricately designed prints traditionally placed inside book covers to indicate ownership. Often personalized and highly detailed, Ex Libris prints are a form of miniature art that speaks to a book lover’s identity and relationship with their collection. By incorporating this format, the exhibition pays homage to the intimate connection between readers and their books.

With Creative Non-fiction, printmaking becomes a visual response to literature, bridging storytelling and fine art. The exhibit highlights how artists expand on written narratives through their chosen medium.

About Hanan Initiative PH
As a collective of women printmakers based in Manila, Philippines, Hanan Initiative PH started with five founding members in 2024, all of whom are members of the Association of Pinoyprintmakers (AP). With Fundacion Sanso’s support, they successfully launched the
initiative with their Oct 2024 inaugural exhibition, “Nature at Dawn”. For 2025, the group is moving forward as they start bringing together a nurturing community of women printmakers, exploring printmaking techniques while sharing their narratives through the fine art of printmaking.

A chance encounter with Lenore Lim at the AP 2023 Christmas Party served as a spark for the founding of Hanan Initiative PH. In addition to Lenore, the group includes two mentors: Angela Silva and Villia Jefremovas. They affectionately refer to these three as their Print Mamas.
Mission: “We are women printmakers, pooling our creative energy to learn various printmaking techniques and build our individual yet collective creative practices. We aim to share our narratives through our skills and creativity.”
