Amorsolo: Chroma

During and beyond his lifetime, Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto (1892-1972) was a much loved and acclaimed painter who influenced generations of Philippine artists. His canvases of historical events and the mundane resonated with audiences both foreign and local for they captured what was perceived to be the essence of the Philippine experience and identity—the Philippine panorama bathed in the brilliant sunlight.
Amorsolo: Chroma invites audiences to also view selected landscapes by the contemporaries of Amorsolo to better understand the artist’s milieu and why he received monikers such as “The Grand Old Man of Philippine Painting,” “the poet of color,” and “the painter of Philippine sunlight.” While these titles speak of Amorsolo’s palette, they also beg the question whether today’s audiences in the age of hypermedia appreciate those titles and Amorsolo’s colors in the same way. The experience of color is not as universal as we assume it is. While limited, recent studies show that almost 5% of Filipinos have color vision deficiency. The exhibition is thus also an exercise in empathy and asks audiences to consider what the world would look like with a different set of eyes.
Amorsolo: Chroma opens to the public on April 25, 2025 (Friday) until September 7, 2025 (Sunday). The gallery is open Tue-Sun, 10AM-6PM. The exhibition is made possible with the support of BPI and Boysen.
