The “Anitotemic Project: In Search of the Primal Gaze” exhibition by the Balaraw Art Collective presents a scholarly inquiry into ancient animism using contemporary methods. The term “Anitotemic” merges “Anito” and “Totem” to denote objects that not only pay homage to the “spirits of the ancestors” but also signify a proactive approach to cultural self-examination. Through meticulously curated assemblages, collages, mixed media pieces, and transient installations, the artists evoke contemporary alchemic artifacts, providing a nuanced perspective for revisiting historical customs. Each artwork encourages contemplation on themes such as myth, magic, and esotericism, prompting viewers to ponder the interconnectedness of humanity, nature, and spirituality within animistic belief systems. This exhibition goes beyond conventional artistic expression, seeking to enrich comprehension of cultural legacy and spiritual interrelations, highlighting the enduring relevance of animistic practices and the transformative influence of art.
