Cebuano cinema classics for a countdown to Philippine cinema centennial
Watch classics of Cebuano cinema this November at Cine Adarna of the UPFI Film Center in UP Diliman.
The screenings of the films are made possible with the help of Paul Douglas Grant and Misha Boris Anissimov of the University of San Carlos Graduate School of Cinema Studies, who have recovered and subtitled the films in the process of authoring their book, Lilas: An Illustrated History of the Golden Ages of Cebuano Cinema (2016).
Lilas chronicles the two productive periods of Cebuano cinema, the 1950s and the 1970s, roughly corresponding to the decades conventionally remembered as the golden ages of Philippine cinema. But while there had been many writings on the Tagalog films that constitute these so-called “golden ages,” the Cebuano films of the periods have been largely forgotten.
Grant and Anissimov’s book, then, helps us rethink the history of Philippine cinema from another and equally important perspective. Moreover, while they are currently not in their best form due to archival neglect, the films to be screened give us a vivid picture of a cinema history that needs to be rediscovered.
