The UP Vargas Museum invites everyone to attend the free public programs of the ongoing exhibition, “Built on Sand,” happening on 29 February (Saturday). “Built on Sand” is part of the Curatorial Development Workshop Exhibitions supported by the Japan Foundation and the Philippine Contemporary Art Network, on view until 7 March 2020.

11:00 – 11:30 am: Panel Discussion: “Drawing Practices and Built on Sand,” moderated by Pristine de Leon, with Nathalie Dagmang, Arvin Dimalanta, Czar Kristoff, Brisa Amir, Doktor Karayom and Alvin Zafra

Talk: Drawing as ethnography

Drawing is a process by which one may simultaneously participate in, as well as observe the world through focused gestures and active seeing. Building on the ideas of Andrew Causey on drawing as seeing, and Tim Ingold on thinking through making, Nathalie Dagmang will talk about how drawing can be used in ethnography. She will share her experiences and learnings from her recent fieldworks and community art workshops wherein she applies drawing techniques learned as an academically-trained artist.

Cities, at its core, are human settlements. An often overlooked yet vital component of cities are its people, those who plan it, build it, and make it run. Beginning with the “Right to the City” concept of Henri Lefebvre and David Harvey, Arvin Dimalanta will talk about the importance of design that is collaborative, community-led, and empowering especially in the context of an urban poor community embattled in development aggression. As a community architect, grassroots organizer, and anthropology student, Dimalanta will share his experiences in aiding the Sitio San Roque community in building and asserting their Community Development Plan.

The discussion will revolve around the importance of drawing in the artists’ process and in their works for Built on Sand. It extends the idea of drawing as figuration, to drawing as ethnography, collaboration, and critical engagement and as recording, mark-making, and marking out space. Questions regarding the exhibition will also be entertained in this segment.
Adaptive Nesting: Occupying Space (With Others)
Moderator: Czar Kristoff
1:00 – 5:00 pm
Interdisciplinary artist and organizer Czar Kristoff will re-stage “Adaptive Nesting: Occupying Space (With Others)” a lecture/performance/workshop previously held at MO_Space during the run of his solo exhibition. Participants will engage in a series of listening and transcription exercises in preparation for a participatory drawing exercise. Group discussions will occur in between. The workshop aims to re-activate the mind and the body, vital parts in instituting/co-instituting time and space.
