The CCP Intertextual Division, in partnership with the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) and Tahanan Books, will launch the picture book “Cely’s Crocodile: The Art and Story of Araceli Limcaco Dans” on November 21, 2020, 3pm, via CCP Intertextual Division and CCP Batang Sining Facebook pages.
The picture book tells about the remarkable life story and works of visual artist Araceli Limcaco Dans. She is best known for her masterful depictions of Calado, the intricate embroidery patterns on pineapple textile. She was instrumental in the formation of the PWU’s Fine Arts Department in the 1950s.
Published by Tahanan Books, the picture book was written by 2019 PBBY-Salanga Prize Winner Gabriela Lee and illustrated by 2019 PBBY-Alcala Prize Winner Adrian Panadero. The CCP, which is a founding member of the PBBY through the efforts of National Artist for Music and former CCP president Lucresia Kasilag, has been supporting the PBBY Salanga and Alcala Prizes annually.
The publication of “Cely’s Crocodile” is part of CCP’s 50th anniversary celebration, while the e-book launch is part of the CCP Children’s Biennale, a month-long series of online events which aims to encourage and develop creativity and artistic expression among children.
Aside from the launching of the e-book, the children can participate in various workshops including writing, drawing and coloring exercises. Author Gabriela Dans Lee will motivate young readers to write using creative prompts as she shares her experience on creating a book from their own family. Illustrator Adrian Panadero, on the other hand, will demonstrate how to draw characters from one’s own experiences.
“Cely’s Crocodile” will be available for online pre-order starting November 15, 2020. To order, visit www.tahananbooks.ph and or follow @tahananbooks on social media for updates.
