Qube represents 5 Filipino artists that speak on various subjects from different regions across the Philippines at the FIACBN (Fira Internacional D’Art De Barcelona), a fair in Barcelona that showcases artists from around the world. Qube has always been progressive and has given artists a wide range of opportunities to share their gifts with local and international audiences. Qube has constantly pushed the envelope in the contemporary art scene by blending a variety of artists, local and international, through their two spaces, Qube Gallery and Qube Contemporary, located in Cebu City, PH. Their initiative allows Filipino art to spread its wings to broader horizons. For the FIACBN 2022 booth, Qube Gallery will present various media to show the trends they see in their market.
PAINTED GALAXIES OF DETAIL.
Geovanni Abing is a mixed-media artist who uses eclectic collages and color to create captivating portraits. The pieces chosen for the fair are explosive and expressive, with galaxies of detail and brilliant compositions. These painted collages of nature and decay, alongside pop culture references, honor the statement, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”
Abing was also the grand prize recipient at the Don Papa Art Competition at the recent Art Fair Philippines, 2020.
A DUAL PERSPECTIVE ON PHOTOGRAPHY
Qube Gallery, following a recent trend to exhibit photography, shows its camerawork oeuvre through photographers Dwight Lu and conceptual artist Archie Geotina. Lu’s exhibited works will comprise of fine art silver gelatin landscape prints. In contrast, Geotina will present a series of works in a digital medium.
Dwight Lu’s (b. 1983) landscape photography reflects his quest for self reflection within nature. His locations range from North America to Asia where he captures vistas devoid of humans, creating a body of work that reflects the personal journey of a man viewing the world though a lens that speaks of a desire to leave humanity’s excesses behind. Lu works in solitude when capturing the images, as well as in his completely analog darkroom process, one of the last remaining practitioners of a dying art in Cebu City.
SCULPTURAL ORIFICES
John Paul Duray (b. 1989) fashions himself as “Anoni Mouse.” This alias permits him to show artworks involving anatomical parts such as lips, bodily orifices, and various appendages. He is showing three wall-bound sculptures of lips in different states. These minimal yet realistic works of emotion are so suggestive in their own right that they don’t even need the rest of the face to convey the characters’ intent.
PAINTED GALAXIES OF DETAIL
Thom Jopson (b. 1990) elevates the scale of his artworks to fantastical heights through mythos and surreal imagery. His work, “L’Absurde”, is a whirlwind of different figures and novelties of all sorts and is reminiscent of Dante’s Inferno, the circles of hell. Jopson shines through his trippy art style, which feel like it’s dissociated from the rest of the world, yet the subjects are so familiar to our histories.
The fair is held at the prestigious Museu Maritim located in the Drassanes Reials de Barcelona building. It is open on November 4 to November 5.
