MANILA – The best way to learn a language is to appreciate and love it.
This is what many Filipino subject teachers miss amid the need to keep with the schedules of their curriculum, or to meet the passing quota of their schools.
Instead of understanding and going deeper into the language, students might be forced to memorize words and concepts that barely make sense—and remembered in a logical context–in the real world. The chance to discover the lyricism of our language, and the significance of how it’s tied to our culture, is lost.
Aware of this gap between learning, appreciation, and the desire to know more, an educational center is mounting a Filipino Literature Workshop for Kids from August 9 to September 27, 2014, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, in celebration of Buwan ng Wika.
It will be held at the Blended Learning Center by seasoned writer Kris Lacaba.
Excited about the prospect of teaching Filipino literature to children ages 9 to 16, Kris hopes to open their minds and help them communicate better. “’The limits of my language are the limits of my world,’” said Ludwig Wittgenstein. So it follows that if you expand your ability to communicate then you are expanding your world,” he says.
Aside from getting acquainted with Filipino works, participants will also try their hand at creating their own poetry and stories in Filipino. “No previous experience necessary,” said Kris.
“As educators, we have to admit that we’ve fallen short on how Filipino is taught in schools,” said BLC Director for Education Zeena Pañares.
“The pedagogy might have drowned out the poetry and heart of it at some point. This workshop hopes to introduce to kids and teens that Filipino is more than ‘panitikan.’ It’s dynamic and cool. That you can write and speak fluently in proper Filipino should be a source of pride,” she added.
“If you’d like your children to learn Filipino and improve their communication skills in an enjoyable, creative way, then they should sign up for this workshop,” said teacher Zeena. “Sometimes, kids just need an artistic approach to awaken an interest or a talent. Then it will cascade to other aspects of their lives.”
