The use of botanical imagery in painting, such as flowers, had flourished in the 15th and 16th century when artists had become interested in depicting objects from the natural world. Flowers, and what they symbolize, have been captured by artists over the centuries to create meanings and metaphors behind every bud and bloom; and blossomed into one of art history’s most popular subjects.

In fact, in observing floral paintings over time, one could actually trace the progression of art—from the use of the lotus flower in Ancient Egypt, to the floral motifs found in decorative art during the Middle ages, to the floral arrangements during the Renaissance, with every artwork encapsulating a moment in time, both in the artistic tradition and in the life of the artist who painted it.

In time with the celebration of the International Day of Flowers, Art Show Philippines presents “Fleur: Art in Bloom” which will showcase more than a hundred selected floral paintings by Filipino artists to celebrate the timeless sense of joy, hope, and inspiration that flowers can evoke.
