Galleria Duemila Opens A New Exhibition Scratch To An Itch

Galleria Duemila opens a group exhibition showcasing renowned Filipino contemporary artists, exhibition runs until 11 October 2025. Curated by artist Raul G. Rodriguez, Scratch To An Itch is a dynamic group exhibition showcasing the works of twelve contemporary Filipino artists whose practices explore, challenge, and extend the language of painting. The exhibition brings together diverse approaches—ranging from material experimentation and conceptual critique to personal narrative and socio-political commentary—all unified by an enduring and intrinsic compulsion to paint.

Jonathan Olazo’s “Skin Angel Shadow”, acrylic on canvas,
101.60 x 76.20 cm / 40.03 x 30.02 in., 2025

The title, drawn from a phrase often used by artist Ramon Manuel de Leon, alludes to painting as both instinct and inquiry—an itch that must be scratched. The exhibition positions itself within the broader discourse of modern and postmodern painting, responding to the historical declarations of painting’s “end” with works that assert its continued relevance, reinvention, and resistance.

Joe Bautista’s “Two in One Structural Form No. 1”, acrylic, ink, plastic, wood and paper on canvas,
122.50 x 183.00 cm / 48.27 x 72.30 in., 2025

Featuring works that collapse boundaries between abstraction and figuration, high and low
culture, and personal and political, Scratch To An Itch is a compelling survey of painting as it exists today—fractured, hybrid, reflexive, and urgent.

Alvin Villaruel’s “Safehaven”, oil on canvas
183.00 x 121.60 cm / 72.10 x 47.91 in., 2025

The exhibition is accompanied by critical exhibition notes written by artist and writer Jonathan T. Olazo, providing insightful context into the artists’ strategies, influences, and interventions within the contemporary landscape.

Don Djerassi Dalmacio’s “T Here”, acrylic and spray paint on canvas
152.50 x 243.84 cm / 60.09 x 96.07 in., diptych, 2021
