Lannnang Symposium 2025
The Lannang Symposium is a dynamic forum that brings together members of the Lannang community, stakeholders, and allies to critically engage with questions of heritage, identity, and especially language. While it incorporates academic-style presentations, the symposium distinguishes itself through a grassroots, community-led model that prioritizes inclusive dialogue and lived experience. It recognizes that meaningful and lasting change must emerge from within, fostering sustained conversations and cultural engagement that empower the Lannang community to reclaim, negotiate, and revitalize its diverse identities and linguistic practices. Building on the foundation of the inaugural symposium—which launched key debates around the meanings of “Lannang” and “Lánnang-uè,” and produced the first edition of the Lannang Manifesto—this year’s event continues to challenge essentialist narratives, affirming that variation within the community is not a weakness but a source of vitality.
The 2025 Lannang Symposium, themed “Embracing Diversity, Building Community,” is larger and more expansive in scope, featuring five pre-symposium satellite events and 18 sessions that blend academic insight with grassroots leadership. The symposium places particular emphasis on language and cultural variation—exploring how these differences shape identity, belonging, and community cohesion. Each day is anchored by a guiding theme:
- “One Heritage, Many Roots” (Day 1),
- “One Language, Many Styles” (Day 2),
- “One People, Many Experiences” (Day 3).
These themes reflect the symposium’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating the heterogeneity of Lannang life. Through community-led panels, creative workshops, and inclusive decision-making spaces, the event creates opportunities for dialogue, reconnection, and critical reflection. In affirming that diversity is foundational—not contradictory—to unity, the symposium continues its mission to empower Lannangs of all backgrounds to shape a shared, inclusive future.
