Lawrence Canto mounts his second solo exhibition this December at Secret Fresh Gallery titled Like Humans Are, a collection of paintings that depict scenes involving humans and crash test dummies. In these pieces, the human figures turn to dummies for companionship and comfort amid their solitary moments and episodes of distress. The surrealistic combination of hues intensified by sharply contrasting light and shadow and iridescent patterns casting on surfaces all create a phantasmagorical vision that probes into tendencies of the human psyche. The dummies represent the stiff, rigid, and fragile, while the humans correspond to the malleable and flexible. The opposing characteristics comingle among the works, suggesting the complexities that define human personality.
A graduate of Multimedia Arts and Sciences from Mapua University, Lawrence Canto has been participating in group exhibitions since 2015 and held his first solo show in 2018. He landed as semi- finalist in the 2016 and 2017 Metrobank At and Design Excellence Art Competition in the Oil/ Acrylic Category. He works in intermedia and explores possibilities with combining painting, print, and video to create a more holistic experience in art. Though utilizing new media and technology, his art takes interest in basic questions and assumptions about human nature and mankind’s evolution in relation to his social environment.
This show is curated by Ryan Francis Reyes.
In cooperation with The Working Animals Art Projects (TWA).
