As a filmmaker, he has been making films independently under his own production circuit called Top Banana Productions, in which he has been showing his films such as "Talos", "a 4some affair" and "The Elders" in UP Diliman, local high schools, independent cable channels and the internet. Then, in 2008, his movie titled, “Manong Juni, Okay Lang ‘Yan.” was nominated for Best Picture and won the Jury’s Choice Award at the Metro Manila Christian Film Festival(now known as Gideon’s Flame Christian Film Festival), competing with other independent movies that featured veteran and respected actors such as Tommy Abuel and Rio Locsin.
As a musician, in February 2009 he independently released a musical compilation called “Middle Class Sensibilities”, featuring tracks such as “I Am The One”, “Love Is Not Enough”, “(Kristine) I Must Be Falling In Love”, "Intolerance" and “Detach Detach”, gaining some respect and critical acclaim from listeners and rock personalities such as Jugs Jugueta of The Itchyworms/Showtime!, Mcoy Fundales of Kenyo/Orange and Lemons, and Marcus Adoro of Eraserheads/Markus Highway. The album was produced by him and Javier Abola, who is also a filmmaker and a fellow band mate. In April he began performing his music live with his group, The Revolving Marnis, and some Beatle tunes with his best friend Michael Xiao Chua under the name The Dennis Roldan Project at the Conspiracy Bar in Quezon City. Consequently, he was able to perform in other clubs such as MAG:NET Katipunan, Capone’s Makati and Route 196, together with other artists such as The Itchyworms, Markus Highway, The Purplechickens, and Silent Sanctuary. By July, his songs were featured at NU107.5 FM’s show called “In The Raw”, and was interviewed live by The Dawn’s ex-guitarist and musical icon Francis Brew Reyes. By the end of 2009, he was nominated for the “In The Raw” Award at the prestigious NU Rock Awards, which was held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
Come 2010, Mayo Baluyut continues to promote and perform his music with various session musicians in which he calls them collectively as Revenge Avenger, with talents as Lui Rodriguez of Rubberpool and Ian Sarabia of The Camerawalls. Early in the year he performed live at the UP Diliman Sunken Garden for UP Sigma Delta Phi, a sorority group that was also known for giving the Eraserheads their first major gig in UP. Then by April, he performed with one of his rock heroes, Ely Buendia of Pupil, and other local artists such as True Faith, Rivermaya, Yeng Constantino and Parokya ni Edgar at Capone’s Makati for a benefit concert for Mike Elgar's (Rivermaya's guitarist) mom called “A Little Help For Our Friend.” He is often seen playing right now at MAG:NET Bonifacio High Street and at AL’s Bar in Paranaque. He is currently writing new songs and is working on new material, hopefully releasing a proper rock album in the near future.
Musical Influences
His music is varied in terms of substance and form but is mainly influenced with punk rock, pop and the blues. He also does sound experimentation with some of his records, working around chord progressions and putting in various sound samples into his music. He grew up listening to The Beatles, The Doors, Eraserheads, Rivermaya, Queen, David Bowie, The Clash, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, U2, The Cardigans and Eric Clapton, to name a few, and eventually, has moved on to listening to other artists and other forms of genres such as jazz, skiffle, rock n' roll, new wave, reggae, funk, alternative rock, and classical music.
Other Interests
Besides music and film, Mayo also involves himself in other social and non-profit activities. He helps, teaches and equips various students, churches and young professionals in terms of leadership enhancement, producing/playing music and band dynamics. He's also an avid fan of beaches, dogs, books, obscure indie bands, comics, topics about philosophy and religion, traveling and exotic food.
