Drilon, Lindslee, Olazo and Veneracion – artists who were born in different decades, showing their portrayal of abstract reality for an exhibition; being able to captivate and evoke emotions and moods with the use of strokes and colors. A sight through the looking glass, the opposite of what is expected. Taking no heed to classical rules. An exploration of movement and expressions in the processes that the artists have mastered through the years.
Rock Drilon
An artist who mastered the art of trusting the process. Through years of being heavily involved in his own works and his own community, Drilon has found his so-called calm in the chaotic processes of abstraction. According to Drilon “It’s really just getting lost and finding one’s self in the process, until the painting starts painting itself” showing off his disciplined spontaneity from the movement of his lines to the vibrancy of the colors that he covers his canvases with.
Rock Drilon hails from Dumangas, Iloilo, Philippines and accomplished his Fine Arts Studies from the University of the Philippines Diliman. He is also known as one of the Philippines’ consistent practitioners when it comes to abstract painting since the 1990s.
Lindsey James “Lindslee” Lee
Lindslee’s pieces are about existence, that his reason for producing his artworks are for proof of his presence in this world–leaving a piece of himself in the art that he does. He does not hold back when it comes to style and shows symmetry between color and movement. Lee’s paintings are ruled by his freedom, which he uses to push the limits of what we deem as reality.
Lindslee obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Painting at the University of Sto. Tomas , Metro Manila, Philippines in 2000 and studied at the Art Students League of New York, USA, affiliated with the Greenwich Art Society in 2001. A consistent finalist in the various national art competitions when he was still a student, he mounted his first solo exhibit at the Harrison Public Library in New York in 2002.
Jonathan Olazo
Olazo’s works involve densely clustered dabs and splatters of paint—with each stroke having a thick and ardent texture. He explores the chameleon-like nature of abstract painting, showing a capacity to embrace and use several ways to put life into his abstract works with varieties of expressions and movement.
Jonathan Olazo received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Painting degree from the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1992. Olazo was a recipient of the Cultural Center of the Philippines 13 Artists Awards in 2007. Currently a professor in the College of Fine Arts at UP Diliman.
Roy Veneracion
Veneracion explores a hybrid of abstraction and figure painting—merging different processes, treatments, and other permutations; not giving thought to the rules of the known classic, producing works from the most authentic expression of himself and his soul. Veneracion’s works dabble in the contention that art comes from one’s experience and revelation, where art is found and not sought after.
Roy Veneracion received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Philippines in 1970. Veneracion has received multiple achievements and 1st prize awards–including the prestigious Cultural Center of Philippines 13 Artists Award in the year 1990.
