READING FILM: FILM LITERACY LECTURE-WORKSHOP SERIES

at the UP CMC Auditorium from 7:30am to 12nn. You may choose to attend on November 29 (Saturday) or on December 1 (Monday).

Admission is FREE. Snacks and certificates will be provided to all attendees.

This Lecture-Workshop is funded by the UP Diliman Office of the Chancellor and with the endorsement from the Department of Education (DepEd).

ABOUT THE LECTURE-FACILITATOR:

PROF PATRICK F. CAMPOS is currently the Director of the Office of Research and Publication (ORP) of the UP College of Mass Communication (UP CMC). He is a film/literary scholar and an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI). His publications and paper presentations – such as, “The Philippine-American Contact, the Politics of Memory, and the End(s) of Cinematic Experimentation,” “Manila By Night as Thirdspace,” and “Narrativizing the Archive: Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines” – have been preoccupied with the convergence of the concepts of “nation” and “cinema”. He is also co-editor of “Media and Communication Theories” recently published by the UP Press.

ABOUT THE FILM:

Title: Raise the Red Lantern (1991)

Director: Zhang Yimou

Synopsis:

China in the 1920’s – After her father’s death, nineteen year old Songlian is forced to marry Chen Zuoqian, the lord of a powerful family. Fifty year old Chen has already three wives, each of them living in separate houses within the great castle. The competition between the wives is tough, as their master’s attention carries power, status and privilege. Each night Chen must decide with which wife to spend the night and a red lantern is lit in front of the house of his choice. And each wife schemes and plots to make sure it’s hers. However, things get out of hand.

 

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The Reading Film: Film Literacy Lecture-Workshop Series is a first for the UP CMC, which is tasked through its Office of Extension and External Relations (OEER), spearheaded by its Director Prof. Shirley Palileo-Evidente. In line with UP CMC’s mission “to develop and strengthen linkages with different sectors and institutions for information and media literacy, and people empowerment,” the UP CMC Office of the Dean, through OEER, aims implement this film/media education campaign with the end view of encouraging learning and increasing media literacy, awareness, and critical thinking, especially among the youth.

As part of our commitment to public service, this lecture-workshop is FREE. The University through the Office of the UP Diliman Chancellor is funding it. Certificates and snacks will be provided to all attendees.
