Reynold Yabut Dela Cruz is a Filipino contemporary painter hailing from San Pedro, Laguna. Born in 1974, Dela Cruz self-studied the craft and was further forged by his perseverance to understand his pursuit of being an artist and connect his circumstances to his aesthetic.
Dela Cruz takes inspiration from his everyday life and is usually moved creatively by his experiences. His different life phases are adapted in his style throughout the years. He inclines to create work that features beautiful faces and has additional elements in the background and the corners of the canvas. His work is not always focused on perfection and beauty, he makes sure to add subtle elements that contradict the focal point of his pieces. This is seen when he tenuously slices the canvas of his works. Eerie and peculiar figures exert a strange yet unique vibe to his works. This is what he calls the equilibrium – in reality, opposing influences always create a balance.
Reynold gained more attention when he became a finalist in the Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards in 2001 and prior then won Top 5 in the Philip Morris Philippine Art awards in 1998. He has been consecutively an honorable mention in the Vermont Asian Freeman Artist Fellowship, USA. Just recently, Dela Cruz got a News Week Feature for Saatchi Gallery, London but since the early 2000’s Dela Cruz has further showcased his works in many locations in the Philippines and also in galleries around Asia.
