Samar”: Tinig, Galaw, Salita
November 27, 2022 | 6 PM, PHT
GT-Toyota Auditorium
Asian Center, UP Diliman, Quezon City
The pandemic has expedited the shift to technology and reliance on online platforms to go about business as usual, even in entertainment, culture, and heritage appreciation. Although access to these materials has been improved because of their wide availability on the internet, it, however, lacks the depth of cultural engagement and communication with their audience and the ability to instill a sense of community and identity.
The recent gradual return to normalcy has signaled the return of traditional activities such as on-site and face-to-face conferences, lectures, seminars, and even theater, musical, and dance performances. In this regard, in time for the celebration of its 67th Founding Anniversary, the UP Asian Center proudly presents The Asia Concert with the theme, Samar*: Tinig, Galaw, Salita. This activity aims to celebrate our identity as part of the Asian Region through a showcase of the talents of the Asian Center community. It seeks to strengthen the role of the Asian Center in bridging Philippine and Asian culture and identity and creating a community aware and appreciative of its Asian and Filipino heritage.
The Arabic term Samar refers to the act of staying up late and having conversations with friends or family which sometimes include Arabic music and poetry. With the expression of community and identity disturbed by the pandemic, this activity seeks to provide a platform for the Asian Center community and its friends through a night of engaging art, music, and meaningful exchanges.
This concert is intended for the Philippines and Asia, in celebration of our growing community and the building of our identity. This is also intended for all Filipinos as we bring to the fore the role of the Philippines in Asian community building and the attainment of “knowledge on our national identity in relation to other Asian nations through profound studies on Asian cultures, histories, social forces and aspirations” (RA 5334).
As part of the efforts of strengthening the Cultural Affairs Program of the UP Asian Center, this concert is for the benefit of the Asian Center Museum. Proceeds shall be to benefit the development, restoration, protection, and expansion of the Museum Art Collection and artifacts (with most of it donated by the Philippines’ foremost anthropologist, the late Prof. F. Landa Jocano, and other scholars).
The event is open to the public. Tickets are priced at PhP 200 each, available for pre-order. Seating is first-come, first-served.
