The Tears of Malumpati

 

Every year more than 1 million children die because they do not have access to clean drinking water.

Panay Island, 300 kilometers south of Manila. In Pandan, a rural village on the island, many people were suffering from kidney disease becausethey did not have access to clean drinking water. “The Pandan water pipeline project” was started with the aim to solve this problem by building a 10 kilometer pipeline. Asuka, a college student, joins the project without giving it much thought when asked by a friend. After she arrives she quickly realizes things are worse than she expected. The labor is intense because they have no funds and the local people are hostile toward the Japanese. But amid the hardship, a five year old girl called Amy welcomes her kindly. The two become good friends through a picture book and Origami. However, Amy was also suffering from kidney disease. When Asuka realizes this, her will to give the people of Pandan and especially her friend Amy safe and clean drinking water becomes much stronger and she visits Pandan many times to help with the project. The people of Pandan and Japan eventually join hands to finish the project. Asuka leaves the local celebrations to give Amy who is in hospital the water. Amy drinks the water in bed and says, “This is the tastiest water in the world.” However …
