a Year-End Group Exhibition
Opening
December 5, 2021
Super Duper Gallery
No.8-A 11th Jamboree, Bargy. Sacred Heart, Quezon City
At times the heavens constitute a black-blue vault that locks multitudes of light. And we are but a small speck within this cold machine that many times made us seem miniscule and irrelevant.
For almost two years, a tiny unseen enemy took away the lives of loved ones and friends whose faces are now engraved in our memories. Often, we are left with nothing but traces and quotidian objects that serve as poignant reminders. The dreams that we have, over the years built with precision and solid mass, now seem like sandcastle stories quickly washed away by the waves. The machine of life was abruptly disrupted. And for some, the possibility of repair remains bleak.
These are just among the many ruminations artists shall respond to in this curated exhibition. Through this gathering of artistic minds, we conclude the year and celebrate the small but meaningful artworld gestures we have made, no easy feat, yet one eventually surmounted.
We might have observed the stars dropping silently, sending up the last fire that marks the tail end of their existence as they are devoured by the dark vastness. The timid ones simply vanish into unfathomable depths, perhaps weary from their arduous journey.
Yet we try to praise the mutilated world. At times a pleasant instantaneous gleam of hope even pierces through the veil of night and yielding light startles pensive travelers like artists and people from all walks of life. The past two years have been mired in darkness and death, yet we smile through the anguish.
On some mornings we pause and listen to the clamorous reed warbler hopping along the tall grass. We breathe the scent of blooms at dawn and realize that waking up each day is a marvelous achievement in itself. In some ways, that art continues to flourish in artist-run spaces like Super Duper Gallery serves as potent testament to how artists can always engage in new solidarities, renew old and broken ones, and even bask in the kindness of strangers. We resonate with these thoughts in the exhibition.
We take comfort in the fact that an invisible thread binds us all and we hang on to it with our last strength, as the universe smiles back at us.
