Joe Bautista, a recipient of the Thirteen Artist Awards from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in the year 1972 and awarded as one of the 5 Contemporary Sculptors also at the same prestigious institution in 1974, is one of the front-liners of conceptual art. He has had exhibits at the Sining Kamalig Gallery together with the Shop 6 icons from 1974-1980. In 1980, he participated at the Festival Contemporary Asian Art Show, in Fukuoka, Japan. In Pinaglabanan Galleries, he was able to produce conceptual installations. Recently, he has had his works shown in an exhibit with Ateneo Art Gallery in Quezon City, Philippines. He mounts a solo exhibition again after 25 years. This time, at Galleria Duemila starting on November 9 – December 28 2019.

Inspired by the Japanese architect, Tadao Ando, Joe Bautista’s compositions are blueprint abstractions on canvas. His bold colors and use of aluminum L-bars defines his fascination with linear and angular heights. The paintings are a combination of geometric and organic forms, following the concept of ‘concrete nature’ Ando has developed. The spirit of Joe Bautista’s works rely on minute details such as the play on light and shadows, the playful doodles and the joy of seeing it in an all-encompassing plan.
