What Makes a Wave is a personal lesson on non-duality, an exploration into the current energy of the natural world and technology through the mediums of photography and synthography, or AI-generated imagery. I began by capturing photographs of water movement in various Laguna rivers then initially used the descriptions of these as prompts to produce images that resemble those found in nature. But the limitations of present technology or of my ability to communicate to the model effectively, showed that the text-to-image AI I used was unable to accurately represent organic forms. As a response, I turned to using prompts to produce images of synthetic materials that resemble the appearance of flow in nature—and then merged the images with my photographs. The resulting composites do not intend to emphasize the duality between the natural and the artificial, but rather show the co-mingling of the two. So, what makes a wave?

A wave embodies the effort to reconcile two different forces, such as the past and present, the present and future, or the natural and artificial.
