Hersley-Ven Casero is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Dumaguete City, Philippines. He is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Foundation University. He received his BSC in Marketing and an Artist of the Year Award from Foundation University, and the Negros Oriental Young Heroes Award in the field of Visual Arts in 2018.
The following year, Casero was granted one of only 3 sponsored places in the 2019 line-up of the Chalk Hill Artist Residency based in Sonoma County, California. As they celebrated their 10 year anniversary, Hersley was the first Filipino to join the long list of talented alumni to have found inspiration at the heart of the seemingly endless vineyards and their breath-taking surrounding natural landscape. The series of works Casero created during his time at Chalk Hill – entitled ‘Wishing Rocks’ – were presented in a solo exhibition at the Chalk Hill Gallery. This caught the eye of a New York-based visual artist and he invited him to join an exhibit with her for a back-to-back show which ran for three months at the High Art Gallery, Sonoma County, CA.
Hersley’s formative years were spent in Dumaguete, his hometown. The culture and vibe of the city has shaped his perspective as a visual artist and has translated into becoming a stage for many of his paintings and photographs.
Casero has a fascination with the strangeness of the mundane. Besides the time spent in creating artworks in his studio, a place he deems his sanctuary, he is out in the streets with his camera. He finds enjoyment in capturing moments of absolute randomness in the everyday lives of people. His subjects always vary and his usual focal points are individuals who go by their daily routines but seem to have a bit of a strange aura with them. His curiosity often leads him to witnessing and capturing weirdly perfect moments that become extraordinary tangible pieces of art.
His works have been recognized and published in local and international publications. Over the years, Casero has explored and experimented with a wide spectrum of materials, subjects, and concepts. He motivates others by collaborating on art projects and finds joy in promoting the freedom of self-expression through art.
