The COVID-19 pandemic was an unexpected, once-in-a-lifetime shock to the system that turned our lives upside down beginning last year.
While life as we knew it was rudely interrupted, the protocols that were enacted to keep us safe also had pleasant, perhaps unintended, results. As we sheltered in place to keep safe, we rediscovered the joys of family and home. In a way, time stopped and took away much of the distractions that kept us away and unable to appreciate what we have.
“Quarantine Sanctuary,” Monnar’s (?)th exhibit, is a great pause to metaphorically smell the roses. “We might have been too busy to notice or accept it, but home has always been there for us. It isn’t just a place for us to rest. Home protects us, recharges us, and makes us happy,” says the artist.
Through a patient and exacting pen, fine brush, and vivid palette, Monnar gives expression to a reimagining of the indoors. “I wanted to show that there’s undeniable beauty in our homes. We tend to over-romanticize distant, foreign lands when there’s so much magnificence right where we are,” he continues.
For the upcoming Chinese New Year, Monnar’s latest exhibit weaves in animals of the Chinese zodiac into the everyday tapestry of home life as we work out, tend to our plants, take care of business, and contemplate in front of our computer screens.
“Quarantine Sanctuary” is a provocative, insightful look at how everyday scenes can inspire and restore joy during at a time we need it the most.

“The best and most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen or even heard, but must be felt with the heart. Life without love is like a tree without blossoms or fruit. The best thing to hold onto in life is each other. ‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”
