“Suspended Identity” is the artist’s search for both origin of identity and a heightened state. Uriel Cui thinks that we Filipinos are a product of conflicting beliefs, made up of a mix of different religions and cultural influences. We are who we are today because our history and environment, and Cui aims to dissect what inevitably makes us Filipino.
With “Suspended Identity,” Cui paints on canvas a refreshed awareness of our spiritual and national identity, blending ancestral narratives with modernity. He aims to bring viewers to a contemplative state through his art, which juxtaposes his own Ilocano background into a tapestry of Filipino design, patterns, and stories.
Uriel Cui has joined around thirty group exhibitions since 2016. He recently took part in the public art project GORA in Quezon City. He studied Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture, in UP Diliman, and Arts Management in DLS-College of Saint Benilde Manila.
