In sculpture, aluminum foil is sometimes molded around an object to “trace” its basic form which will serve as the artist’s 3D model. In the same way, our minds deconstruct objects we see into basic shapes before they fully register to our brains and we become familiar with them over time. Yet when the same set of basic shapes are skewed, would they continue to represent the same objects? Abstraction may render an image chaotic, but the same image can also achieve harmony.
Ali Alejandro’s intricately rendered foil series plays with distortion and refraction of otherwise familiar objects deviating from distinguishable forms in a balancing act of chaos versus harmony.
