Bulong: A whisper-only event at Commune Café Bar

A collaboration between Warehouse Eight, Kwago and Michael Lorenzana Videography and Photography, Echoes PH is bringing its intimate sanctuary for musicians and poets to Commune Café Bar  in Poblacion on April 10, 2019, 8pm – 12 midnight.

Echoes PH aims to expand and explore other ways we express ourselves beyond the spectacle of sound in its usual forms. Set to be a whisper-only event (noise level maximum: 20 decibel) with the exception of the performers, Bulong will be a night for musicians and poets to share their secrets to a crowd intimately. This gathering is meant to be an exploration of other forms of nonverbal communications, such as sign language, writing, note passing, and the like.

“When we organise special occasions like Bulong, it organically turns into more than just a gig through challenging and deconstructing how music can be experienced and playing with senses of an audience at the same time. We aim for these nights to be memorable, something people don’t get to attend on a normal basis.” Kayla Dionisio, founder of Warehouse Eight shares.

Bulong will also Echoes PH’s first event outside the cozy confines of Warehouse Eight, and a stepping stone to building a sanctuary of music, poetry, and creative freedom in more places. As Echoes is a community, it is not limited to a certain venue or event—it can be brought and built anywhere to transform different places into spaces of storytelling through music and poetry.

Czyka Tumaliuan, founder of Kwago, talks about why they decided to bring Echoes to Commune.

“Commune believes in the power of books and storytelling. We think our vision of creating a safe space for artists are aligned. By moving Echoes outside, we want to show that we can bring the same warmth and intimacy outside Warehouse Eight, that we can transform any space into a beautiful escape.”

All performances will be stripped down. No microphones will be available for the poets and musicians.

Michael Lorenzana, main videographer and photographer of Echoes, says that “the absence of mics would hopefully allow musicians to have complete control and focus during their performance….to create an atmosphere that gives the musicians full attention and encourage audiences to give their undivided attention to each artist.”

Through creating constraints in social interaction during the event, Bulong recreates the gig experience, making it a night that shouldn’t be missed.
