The law of opposites has always been a captivating artistic subject and the source of nagging questions for most artists. Expi Perez takes this as a cue for his latest exhibition. He aims to is to engage to find beauty and calm in the chaos.
Perez’ burst of electric, pulsating, and gritty patchwork of colors, semi-legible, scarcely discernible images, and composition tease a tumultuous mood and energy but in fact, they are a self-distilling vision and a promise of stillness and inner calmness.
Initially, these paintings were inspired by the party scenes of Saguijo and the now-gone B-side and The Collective. They are somewhat a translation of his experiences in these spaces and his attempt to recall the culture, artistic vibe, and energies of these spaces where artists, creatives, and a passionate party crowd often flock together to enjoy each other’s company amid loud, crowded parties and events. This was also the period of his early work in the art industry. But beyond the allure of these spaces and their devotees, he brings his introspection to a level of reasoned pursuit.
Through the captivating medium of palette knife oil painting, Perez his theme of finding order in chaos and a sense of submission with total abandon. In layered form is what hopes to be freely imagined, alive and tangible. In this exhibition, he harmonizes into a visual experience the opposing ideas of chaos and calm that amidst the persistence of disarray, there is an undercurrent of submission, acceptance, and self-discovery.
