Prof. Ahmar Mahboob from the University of Sydney will be presenting a talk entitled “Decolonising Pedagogies” on January 15 (Wednesday), 2:00PM.

Abstract:

Borrowing western academic knowledge/traditions and building our education on them can be considered as one form of a colonised pedagogy. For example, our understandings of the disciplines of anthropology, linguistics, psychology, and sociology (to name a few) are based on western thinking and traditions (and written in western languages).
This colonisation of our knowledge structures has consequences not just for our academia, but our communities and peoples. In this session, we will discuss some of the ways in which our academia is colonised and consider actions that can be taken to decolonise pedagogy.
