DIALOGUES

Diptychs were popular during the early Greek and Roman eras as a structure used for constructing writing tablets. Consisting of two flat surfaces connected by a hinge, they were made of various materials: leaves, wood or bone. Some had inner parts that were filled with wax, which can be inscribed on and then melted to be reused.

Diptychs were later used as a format for works of art – with panels consisting of carved ivory or paintings. During the Christian era, the form was used in making altar pieces that narrate religious stories. Diptychs became popular because they can be portable and can be easily displayed.

Some artists have found the diptych to be an interesting format: it offers a unique element in the juxtaposition of two separate images and parts.

Modern artists have explored this element to create new, fresh and unexpected effects, as well as meanings in their works.

This exhibition will feature works of artists exploring the diptych as a format in the abstract idiom.

Each work will consist of two parts and displayed adjacent to each other – but not necessarily side by side. The sizes and orientation of each part may also vary.

The work may be in the form of drawings, paintings, photographs, carvings, or any other material. The defining feature is the use of the form – two parts having a dialogue with each other – to produce a unique and distinct work. Each artwork will explore interesting possibilities offered by the format, which may be limited in a work consisting of one piece.
