Synopsis

On three islands divided by the sea, two paths cross as the community awaits a union through marriage, but the promised vows seems unsure.. As the day turns into a moonlit night, an old flame is relit in a wave of violent desires that leads to chaos, turning a calm ocean into a raging sea of blood.

The Director

Tuxqs Rutaquio is one of a few theatre workers and educators who has successfully evolved from acting on stage to designing for theatre, and to becoming a director of the more daring productions of recent years.

His most notable works in stage and design were Tanghalang Pilipino’s Juego de Peligro, Kleptomaniacs, Ibalong, Der Kaufmann, and ZsaZsa Zaturnnah: Ze Musikal by Carlo Vergara; Ballet Philippines’ Pusong Wagas and the Tales of the Manuvu; Atlantis Production’s Spring Awakening: The Musical; Repertory Philippines’ Little Women; and Dulaang UP’s Lulu and Orosmon and Zafira.
Tuxqs is a recipient of Gawad Buhay! Philstage Award for Outstanding Set Design for Tanghalang Pilipino’s Coup d’Etat / Kudeta by Mustapha Matura (2008) and A Streetcar Named Desire / Flores Para Los Muertos by Tennessee Williams and adapted by Orlando Nadres (2009). With Rody Vera, Tuxqs won the Gawad Buhay! Philstage Award for Outstanding Stage Direction for 2013’s Der Kaufmann by Vera, staged by Tanghalang Pilipino.

He is best known to portray Ada in the hit musical, ZsaZsa Zaturnnah: Ze Musikal. Other notable roles in Floy Quintos’ Ang Kalungkutan ng mga Reyna and Frank Wedekind’s Lulu.

He is the festival director and dramaturg of Virgin Labfest (an annual festival of untried, untested and unstaged plays of Filipino playwrights) since 2011. He also used to be the Associate Artistic Director in Tanghalang Pilipino from 2010 to 2015. From 2012 to 2016, he represented the Philippines at the ASEAN Performing Arts Festival (APAF) in Tokyo, Japan. In 2015 and 2016, he devised and directed a 15-minute piece and a full-length play, Teru! Teru! (Shine! Shine!) with Japanese actors performed at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro, Tokyo Japan.

His collaboration with playwright Layeta Bucoy have layered Tuxqs’ more recent work as director with relevance, where his directorial and production design work have become imbued with the realities that theatre cradles. Among the many collaborations, Doc Resureccion: Gagamutin ang Bayan and Walang Kukurap were critically acclaimed productions that dealt with the political landscape of nation and, which dared to bring it to its truthful and violent ends. Their other collaborations were Sandosenang Sapatos (Philippine representative at the 2014 International Festival in Beijing China), Lear’s Daughters / Tatlong Anak, Dalawang Ina, Isang Hangal, Las Mentiras de Gloria, Ellas Innocentas and an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus / Tinarantadong Asintado.
