It is in the interstices of the long and storied narrative of humankind’s past that we often find traces and fingerprints of women in art. Lurking in the shadows, for the longest time, women have been excluded in the art-making process solely on the basis of gender. But as contemporary art progresses, the spaces which women inhabit continue to widen in breadth.

Celebrated artist Judy Chicago writes in 1979, at the height of the women’s liberation movement, “Women had always made a significant contribution to the development of human civilization, but these were consistently ignored, denied, or trivialized.” To say that women have had no impact in the evolution of the artistic canon is a blatant lie, but to acknowledge that they were often overlooked allows us to develop a more pertinent understanding of the female space in art, and how works by women artists manage to reflect the female experience and the roles they play as both artist and a member of an oft-prejudiced society.
In line with International Women’s Month, Hiblang Lila is a celebration of women in art. Visual artists Bea Alcala, Jessa Balag, Chloe Dellosa, Gale Encarnacion, Babylyn Fajilagutan, Nina Garibay, Shalimar Gonzaga, Arco Iris, Ina Jardiolin, Victoria Keet, Gabi Nazareno, Julieanne Ng, Ikea Rizalon, Maia San Diego, Marilou Solano, and Janelle Tang present recent works which, while varying in technique and style, manage to encapsulate the Philippine contemporary art scene as it continues to be reframed to include the female lens and experience, and examine how the representation of women as artists allows us to recognise and appreciate female identity and independence.
