|A Retrospective Exhibition by Nap Jamir II

Gallery Two, UP Fine Arts Gallery
28 February – 29 March 2025
Images: 1974-2024, a retrospective exhibition of photographer, filmmaker, and art educator Nap Jamir II, opens at the UP Fine Arts Gallery (Parola) on February 28, Friday.
This retrospective exhibition gathers five decades of Jamir’s work, straddling the practice of mixed media, conceptual art, installation, street photography, and digital imaging.
Jamir started exhibiting in 1973 and joined the seminal art group Shop 6 led by the late Roberto Chabet, holding his first solo exhibition the year after. In 1974, he was among the third batch of Thirteen Artist Awardees of the Cultural Center of the Philippines along with Glenn Bautista, Nonon Padilla, and Nestor Vinluan.
In the 1980s, Jamir and Neal Oshima founded Shadow Visual Design Group, which became known for its cutting-edge imagery in photography and design and became a byword in the advertising field.
Jamir teaches photography, cinematography, and advertising subjects at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, UP Film Institute, Ateneo de Manila University and the Asia Pacific Film Institute.
The exhibition walks visitors through key works representing moments in Jamir’s lifelong journey as a “rare photographer with a conceptual art bent”, as Marian Pastor Roces once described him in 2018. This is the UP Fine Arts Gallery’s second exhibition this year which is dedicated to showcasing the work and legacy of Philippine photographers connected to the UP College of Fine Arts.
