Dr. José Monserrat Maceda (1917-2004) was a composer, ethnomusicologist, pianist, philosopher, scholar, and National Artist. He pioneered ethnomusicology in the Philippines and went on to study the music of the Philippines and Southeast Asia, and later composed music that was unique in its aesthetics and theoretical constructs. He was a multi-awarded scholar and artist, for which he was bestowed the National Artist Award by the Republic of the Philippines.

As an opening for this year-long celebration, we have in line for January 31, 2017 the following kick-off events: an opening of the Maceda exhibit titled “reading Maceda, PRELUDE” at the UP Bulwagan ng Dangal, and the re-staging of “Pagsamba” in the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice. Additionally, in February 2, 2017, we will also have a re-staging of Dr. Maceda’s “Cassettes 100” in the UP Vargas Museum.
