Imagine a song exuding that sort of swagger, possibly more suited to a dank pub set in a city somewhere in the United Kingdom rather than in some hip hole-in-the-wall in Manila, its inebriated melody & prosaic lyrics coming straight at you, hitting you like anything with its raw candor. The Bernadettes gives you just that with their first single, “Let’s Make Babies,” released under Lilystars Records in May 2009.
Just sounding better with every swig, The Bernadettes’ music is honest-to-goodness “drunk pop” as the band composed of brothers Paolo & Poch Angeles & good friend Andre Salazar refer to it. With no refined guitar riffs, smooth bass lines nor clean percussions & vocals, just about anything these guys mete out is “dirty.” And where these elements seem to make a definite recipe for musical disaster, The Bernadettes succeed at the opposite by making it sound so good-with or without alcohol. They have performed alongside the county's top musicians in major events such as 5th Jam Musicfest, Fete Dela Musique, Youth For Peace Concert, Jack TV's Jackstock & Jam 88.3's Project Ondoy as well as underground music productions receiving good word-of-mouth.
Within a throng of musicians in a country brimming with talent, The Bernadettes emerges as a fine example of new blood in Manila’s soundscape. “Let’s Make Babies” is the sound of a notable band only just beginning & is proof that no similar act comes quite as close just yet, ascertaining that drunk pop’s rise may very well be the next best thing since beer.
