TARI is a collaborative work in progress presented by Daloy Dance Company and HATAW (A Canada-based company that brings together professional dancers, singers, musicians, multidisciplinary artists and community dancers form Filipino folkdance troupes across North America to interpret traditional Filipino folkdance through the lens of the Filipino-Canadian experience, fusing diverse styles of dance.). Tari is an exploration where reuweda plays centerstage—the primarily masculine domain of the sabong. The performance is a battlefield where two tribes unite; worlds collide as competition inevitably turns kindred.
Tari in its creative process and performance aims to be a statement on the competitive nature of artists brought by a palpable sense of not having enough space or resources to ‘create’. There is a false sense of animosity/rivalry between dance companies because of this, and through this collaboration between Daloy Dance Company and Hataw, we aim to dispel that myth by coming together, sharing platforms, exchanging processes and building a more inclusive and friendly community, while exploring sabong, a staple sport deeply embedded in the Filipino culture.
