"...a splendid performance. .."

NSC News Supplement

May I invite you to watch the remount of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild’s latest production, “Ranaw: Isang Alamat.” New music, over 20 songs, exciting choreography, an engrossing story, and connections to history and today’s challenging conditions should make “Ranaw” an enthralling experience.

Considered a landmark production, “Ranaw” performed to wide audiences as a touring showcase of the CCP in the late 80’s when the center re-invented its vision to be more reachable to the people. The IPAG, then a fledgling 10-year old company, was one of several groups tapped to showcase the cultural strengths of the regions.

With the CCP program, we performed in over 13 cities in Luzon and in more Visayan and Mindanao venues. The shows drew unanimous acclaim and two decades later, IPAG has established its light in the performing arts firmament touring productions after productions nationwide and abroad from its 40-plus full-feature repertoire.

“Ranaw” innovates its recreation updating its first road-touring salvo in 1986 after it won in the 1985 CCP (Bulwagang Gantimpala) Playwriting Contest. The play’s meanings branch to folklore, history, politics, literature, and peace concerns displayed via the magic of the stage. It has become more relevant in the light of our concerns for peace in our troubled Mindanao regions.

The play presents our pre-colonial tribes in turmoil in conditions that prophesy our fragmented state today. Dug from the research of the late Dionisio Orellana, “Ranaw” narrates the journey of Maguindanaon- Maranao-Higaunun -Iliganun epic hero Bato Lakungan. In a significant sense, it mirrors the same conditions that have beset this region since time immemorial.

This musical is choreographed by Melvin Pascubillo and Leilani Fernandez and presents IPAG’s veteran dancers and actors who’ve had long international performance exposures.
