Venezuela en tres películas: A Film Festival
A Celebration of Culture and International Solidarity
between the Venezuelans and the Filipino People

A collaborative project of the UP Center for International Studies (UPCIS), the UP Film Institute (UPFI), and the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, with the Philippines-Bolivarian Venezuela Friendship Association (PBVFA) and International League of Peoples’ Struggles (ILPS) Commission 11.

Join us on January 27, as we express our solidarity with the people of Venezuela and the Bolivarian process, and in commemoration of the Philippine First Quarter Storm movement that challenged US Imperialism and the dictator Marcos.

We will be screening three (3) films provided by the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, at the Cine Adarna, UP Film Institute on January 27, 2020 (Monday):

1.) Azú (2013)

Running Time: 100 mins
Director: Luis Alberto Lamata

Synopsis/Plot:
In 1780, an African woman is forced into slavery and sold at auction. The sugarcane farmer who buys her becomes obsessed and has no idea her ancestral destiny will disrupt his plantation.

2.) Hijos de la Sal (2018)

Running Time: 95 mins
Directors: Luis Alejandro Rodríguez and Andrés Eduardo Rodríguez

Synopsis/Plot:
In Cumaragues, Venezuela an elderly father, Evaristo and his pubescent children, Enrique (13) and Maria (16) survive by harvesting salt from the sea. After the father dies, they live alone. Isolated from the outside world they become increasingly distanced, whilst their lust starts to blossom. Their lives get a lot harder. The brutal reality of harvesting sea salt coincides with their blossoming sexuality. Their lives of solitude drive them further apart whilst awakening lust makes itself known.

3.) El DiCaprio de Corozopando (2017)

Running Time: 91 mins
Director: Luis Octavian Rahamut

Synopsis/Plot:
To the south of the Guárico state is a little-known town called Corozopando. Gregorio, the mayor, has always wanted to bring world recognition to his tiny town. Although this aspiration seems far fetched, one night the prophecy of a spirit magically convinces both Gregorio and the rest of the inhabitants to place their hopes in a child named Rubén Darío, imposing on him the responsibility of bringing fame to the town, and calling him the ‘DiCaprio of Corozopando.’ For his part, Rubén innocently assumes this responsibility and he insists on doing everything possible to bring the small, remote community fame and fortune. An eccentric, slightly absurdist, and utterly absorbing offbeat tale of the sometimes hilarious limits of local ‘celebrity’ and the desire to be recognized in that big world beyond.

This event is free and open to all.

See you then!
