The Drawing Room presents three artists that push the boundaries of the image and materiality in contemporary art practices in the Philippines. Miguel Aquilizan, Kiko Escora and Kat Medina presents vibrant imagery wrought in the manner that questions what we perceive as cutting-edge or hip. Their practices challenge the society of appropriation and authenticity, and how artists take from their immediate resources and environment to bring out specific languages of inheritance from history and populist culture present in the Philippines.
Miguel Aquilizan

Juan Miguel Aquilizan (b. 1986. Manila, Philippines) currently lives and works in Queensland, Australia. Sculpture was his main track in the University of the Philippines Diliman. His practice has received recognitions in the University, Philippine Art Awards and the Metrobank Foundation through the course of his studies in Manila. Heirloom was his first solo exhibition and it was held in The Drawing Room, Manila while his upcoming second solo show will be presented in The Drawing Room Singapore. The gallery featured his solo project in Art Taipei 2013. Juan Miguel Aquilizan moved to Australia in 2006 with his parents Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan.
Kat Medina

Kat Medina (b. 1984. Manila, Philippines) is a painter who utilizes elements of craft-making in her works. She explores making places through architectonic nuances in gesture and in the configuration of color. Medina’s notable first solo exhibition was held in her house, this event a milestone to her investigation on domesticity and ‘bigger circles’. Medina graduated from Far Eastern University in Manila with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. Her first solo show was held in the artist’s studio space and her first solo exhibition in a commercial venue was last October 2013 in The Drawing Room Manila. She has been featured in surveys of contemporary craft-based practices and social practices in group shows in Singapore and Manila.

Kiko Escora

Kiko Escora (1970. Manila, Philippines) is a seasoned artist in the practice of painting in the Philippines. His themes pilot a dichotomous relationship to paint and charcoal all the while chronicling memorable mis-en-scenes of high/underground urban life. He was shortlisted in the first ever installment of Ateneo Art Awards in 2004 after he was bestowed the 13 Artists Awards in 2003. Kiko Escora’s works have been featured in important surveys on Southeast Asian contemporary art within the region.
