Pagsamba is a composition by Jose Maceda in 1968 that displays a ritualistic atmosphere on the Tagalog text of the Mass (Dictionary of Filipino Musical Terms, 2013). The piece requires more than 200 singers and instrumentalists, i.e. 100 mixed voices, 25 male voices, 8 suspended agung, 8 suspended gandingan, 100 players (100 ongiyong [whistle flutes], 100 balingbing [bamboo buzzers], 100 palakpak [bamboo clappers], 100 bangibang [yoke-shaped wooden bars; played with beaters]). It was premiered at the University of the Philippines Parish of the Holy Sacrifice Chapel also in 1968. In line with Jose Maceda’s centenary celebration in 2017, Pagsamba is to be re-staged in the same venue, with a mass dedicated to his birth day and as an opening to the UP Diliman Arts Month 2017.
This event is co-presented by the UP College of Music, Parish of the Holy Sacrifice, Office of the Chancellor, UP Diliman, QC in cooperation with the Oica UP Diliman
