“The absence of the witch does not invalidate the spell.”
– Emily Dickinson
Where witches have gone is an ode to Woman’s enchanting and irrepressible ability to creep through the crevices of a misogynist culture to evade extinction. For centuries, the image of the witch has been shrouded in darkness and fear no thanks to our 16th-century colonizers. A collective amnesia washed over us and a hatred towards the mystical and sensual tenets of our humanity pervades us even today.
However, we have heard and seen the soothsayers and fortunetellers of Quiapo. Analogous tropes also emerge in the media—femme fatale, enchantress, and the siren among others. What does this tell us? These are testaments that ‘witches’ are not gone. Rather, that they have morphed into other translations, slithered their songs along the margins though silenced in history books, and in this exhibit, have cast their own creativity in various works of art—paintings, needlework, etc.– to show this is where they have gone. This exhibit aims to reclaim the image of the witch as a symbol of feminine allure, and power, challenging the demonization of women’s autonomy and creativity.
