Reuel Rendon finds inspiration in what may be deemed bare and desolate landscapes. By looking past what one might consider the more standard beauty of nature, he aims to illuminate the unexpected. Woven into his visual narrative is the surreal abstraction, an even more important element. For the artist, his depthscapes have an emotional content. Feelings of separation, solitude and quiet isolation pervade in his works.

The state of no-mind means a pure state where the mind is entirely in the present moment — free of wandering thoughts. The works in “Depthscapes” often include the use of defined forms and random amorphous shapes as metaphors to relate duality (such as logical thoughts versus intuition), which achieve an interesting balance between description and abstraction.

Rendon concludes that the nature and essence of life is growth, and that growth, rather than basic movement in time, can take place within an individual when a self-awareness of one’s living experience is taking place. Although the works are within the realms of surreal abstraction, there is still a sense of place, another space, or another world. A place that feels familiar, but never physically witnessed.
