“Within the sphere of the contemporary, only the possible is real. That isto say, only the possible can be true.

There are spheres other than the contemporary, although each of us has only two hands.”

Marc Escalona Gaba, March 2017, revised Sep 12, 2017

Galerie Stephanie proudly presents “Apertural”, Marc Escalona Gaba’s 20th solo exhibition. This show features a new direction in his apertural paintings. Rare for Philippine contemporary
artists’, Gaba’s approach to his painting has largely been consciously and purposively attempting to expand the idea of what a painting could be, and it has always provided the vital
originality to his work. Even more remarkable, Gaba has continuously latched on to certain ideas over the past decade to continually develop them, expanding the idea or principle in both depth and breadth.

The apertural paintings, which straddle painting and sculpture, are a product of such an exploration; and “Apertural” brings them even farther. The apertural paintings can be considered as an exploration of one of Gaba’s credos that the image is space. They appear to be rooted, or at least related in idea to, his 2009 works for “Where or When” (Silverlens Gallery, 2009) inspired by Edward Hopper, where Gaba cutout blank spaces within photographic reproductions of Hopper’s paintings of interiors which resulted to giving more importance to what was not longer there, as these cutout spaces where the point of the exercise and precisely emphasized absence – space – as the defining element of the image.

“Apertural” will hold its opening reception on July 4, 6pm at Galerie Stephanie located at the 4th floor, East Wing of Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong. It will be on view until July 18. For inquiries, kindly contact us via email at inquiry.galeriestephanie@gmail.com or call us at (+632) 940-5726.
