The BuwanBuwan Collective Presents

“BAKUNAWA XX : PERFECT SLUMBER”

celebrating the essence of the roman numeral XX (the number 20)

-Number 20 stands for souls who have the knowledge of both good and evil and must consciously make choices to attain balance in all situations.

-Twenty is twice ten and can, at times, mean a complete or perfect waiting period.

-Represent the God solar for the Mayas.

-The number 20 is considered as ominous for saint Jerome because it indicates the universal fight, but it also represents the source of all energy of the world.

-This number is represented in Hebrew by the letter caph, in form of opened hand, to seize and hold. The eleventh mystery of the Tarot, which corresponds to this letter, and consequently with this number, is “the Force” which expresses energy, the activity and the work.

– Number associated to the resurrection or to the reincarnation, according to Creusot.

Biography

The Bakunawa is a mythical sea serpent bearing a mouth the size of a lake, a tongue as red as fire, and two pairs of massive wings. Enamored of the moon’s beauty, the Bakunawa would fly straight out of the ocean and into the night sky to devour the moon whole—what we now know as a lunar eclipse. Pre-colonial tribesfolk would gather outside their homes banging loudly on pots and pans hoping to scare away the creature, others playing gentle songs with their bamboo instruments to soothe it to sleep so a brave warrior could close in for the kill.
With monthly “Bakunawa” events, Pinoy beatmakers and live electronic musicians of the BuwanBuwan Collective give a modern nod to these ancient lunar gatherings. With selections of both original and carefully curated electronic music, they aim to awaken, to mesmerize, and to bring people together.

Rounding up like-minded friends to have fun with each other’s ideas was the intention of Manila-based producer Jorge Wieneke V (aka SimilarObjects) when the collective was formed: “BuwanBuwan” refers to a traditional Filipino children’s game. Enacting the lunar eclipse, players draw a circle on the ground representing the moon, and must stay inside it. Meanwhile, one player acts as the Bakunawa: he may not enter the circle, but must touch another player within to switch places.

The BuwanBuwan Collective believes that in the playground that is music, everyone deserves a chance to be at the center. Being an odd fit for both the live band and EDM/DJ scenes locally, the group decided to play by its own rules. Thus, Bakunawa events are as much about people making noise as they are about the collective reclaiming the night—and sharing it with the now hundreds of like-minded listeners game enough to be there every month.
