ARTIST STATEMENT:
In this exhibit, John Mercado Cesar showcases a beautiful variety of expressive images, mostly influenced by pop art, modern contemporary street art, and mixed media pop art. His artworks radiate with a strong array of brilliant colors gleaming from his seemingly distorted portraitures. Imperfection, according to the artist, makes us embrace the beauty of being human. He says explains that in order to achieve real happiness, we need to free ourselves by accepting our imperfections.
The element of having fun and letting go is very prevalent in John’s works. It shows how some perceived negative traits by others can still be beautiful like fear, insecurity, the pain of being broken, loss, disappointment, and regret. According to him, these are things that we all experience in different intensities and that the beautiful imperfect art of being human makes us perfect. So let’s not judge others because no one is immune to these perceived negative experiences.
Perhaps this concept is filled with paradoxes but it can be very true. Because we need to embrace our imperfections in order to achieve perfection.
His pop and street-inspired works are not just typical straight lines, it is noticeably free-flowing and very natural, almost childlike and pure. In a way that’s honest art with no pretensions. And according to the artist, he celebrates that messiness because it’s what makes him human.
John makes sure that for every artwork, be it a commissioned work or for an exhibit, 30 percent of the proceeds should always go to Anawim Lay Missions Foundation, Inc. Home of the Abandoned Elders in Montalban Rizal. This has been an ongoing driving force in his creative process because according to him, the darkness of being left is the seed where his beautiful and colorful paintings sprout from and bloom forth.
