DIGITAL CINEMATOGRAPHY

Brief Description
Cinematography is a vital aspect of filmmaking. Cinematography covers elements of film such as shot selection, framing, composition, and lighting. The cinematographer is in charge of framing the shots in cinematic ways that would be enjoyable and pleasing for the audience.
The course is designed to explore the fundamental aspects of cinematography from basic camera set-up to lighting principles. Several principles and techniques that enhance the storytelling of a film are included in the discussions. A hands-on activity is also incorporated in the workshop so as to provide cinematography work conditions/atmosphere.
About the facilitator:
Nap Jamir is a multi-awarded cinematographer and director who has been working in the field of Philippine advertising and filmmaking since the 1980s.

ARTS & ANIMATION FOR KIDS & TEENS

Brief Description:
Animation has introduced colourful stories, created fantastic worlds and expanded possibilities of the moving image. Through animation, creatives, artists and filmmakers alike have found ways by using images, movement and other techniques to make their ideas come to life.
This course is designed to equip the participants with the knowledge of animation production phases to create their own short animation video. From the pre-production phase, with the use of storyboard to develop their ideas of their animation story, to the production phase, using different styles and techniques such as flip books, object and clay animation, and cut-outs silhouette animation, and lastly, the post-production phase by using an animation editing program on a computer in rendering their works for their final output.
About the facilitator:
Bryan T. Quesada is an independent filmmaker, animator and editor. He teaches animation at the University of Philippine Film Institute and has taught animation courses at the Ateneo de Manila Grade School and the Mapua Institute of Technology. He has conducted several animation workshops at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the University of the Philippines Film Institute under Pinoy Animagination. He also handled video production workshops at the Ateneo Jesuit Communications. His works as a video editor includes Red Saga, an experimental film that won praises from CCP and Kodak. He owns and manages Stormbrew Digital Design, a multimedia production outfit.

Brief Description:
With the advent of digital technology, photography has never been this easy and instant. It allows one to explore and experiment with the art of visual storytelling—a good foundation for aspiring filmmakers.
This course is designed to introduce and explore the art of photography as a primary skill needed in film production. Composition, framing, lighting, camera settings, and photo editing are included in the topic discussions as well. As this workshop falls within the scope of digital technology, it also takes time in thoroughly discussing the parts and operations of a digital camera.
About the facilitator:
Renan Saliva currently teaches photography at the U.P. Film Institute in which he was granted with the Best Thesis award in his student days. He has worked for various TV shows, won a Golden Dove Award, and went back to the university to teach.

This course is designed to equip workshop participants with a fundamental understanding of the art of acting as applied to digital material such as film, TV, commercials, and other digital content.
About the facilitator:
Rolando Inocencio teaches theater & film subjects at the Meridian International (MINT) College and conducts workshops for Octoarts & Regal Films, among others. He has taken acting workshops under Ana Valdes-Lim, Noa Rotem, Kiara Pipino (Michael Chekov), John Maloney (Viewpoints) and Ron Burrows of Stella Adler Studio. He is a character actor for television & film. This is the second time that he will conduct the Film Acting workshop for U.P. Film Institute.

EXPERIMENTAL ANIMATION WORKSHOP

Brief description:
Animation is one of the oldest techniques utilized by storytellers to manipulate the sequences of images. With animation, filmmakers found a way to explore and push the potential of filmmaking by exceeding the boundaries of imagination.
The short course is designed with a hands-on approach to help the participants think outside the box as they explore the fundamentals of animation and its various styles, such as hand drawn and stop motion, through the use of traditional and unconventional materials. Editing and sound design are included in the discussions. At the end of the workshop, the participants will have a chance to view their final output.
About the facilitator:
Rox Lee – aside from being a part-time painter is also an advocate of independent cinema, apart from making short animations, experimental films, documentaries, and feature films, he is also a cartoonist with their comic strip ‘Cesar Asar’ which they made into a movie together with his brother Mon. He is one of the founders of Animagination which became Animahenasyon – an animation festival held annually.
He is also one of the founders of Cinema Regla, a group of filmmakers, visual artists and musicians who spread the influence of independently produced Filipino art throughout the country. He co-founded Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, an artist fellowship grant from Japan Foundation enabled him to stay in Tokyo in the 90s.
He took up high school at Ateneo de Naga, studied Architecture in Manila and at the present doing a self-produced movie and into paintings.
