“East Meets West” is a Two-Man Exhibition situating still-life works by Renee Avila and Ku Romillo vis-à-vis in a comparative tableau reflective of their distinct styles; with Renee representing her influences from western, classical motifs and Ku with her oriental-inspired mystique.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Renee Avila was born in Quezon City, Philippines in 1996. Growing up in a city with limited exposure to green spaces, she both admires and longs for nature. Her hobby of creating nature-inspired drawings developed further when she took a Bachelor’s Degree in Painting at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. After completing her degree in 2016, she started joining group exhibitions in different galleries. For Renee, art is more than just a creative venue; it serves as her safe space where she can explore intimacy and different states of the human mind. Aiming to portray the calm beauty that can result even from opposing elements, her oil paintings revolve around the concept of merging the motionless art made by man and the ever-changing creations of nature. Many of her paintings are inspired by classical sculptures and the works of William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
Ku Romillo is a visual artist born in 1989 who currently lives in Metro Manila. She acquired a Bachelor’s degree in Painting at the University of Santo Tomas in 2013. Her ouevre consists mostly of oil paintings revealing moments of introspection, employing disguised symbolism in her eclectic body of work. She has had two solo exhibitions: “In My Mind I Am Free” (2017) at The Metro Gallery and “Mea Culpa” (2021) at Secret Fresh.
Show runs from May 4 to 17, 2022. The gallery is open for viewing every Tuesday to Saturday from 1 to 6PM. We encourage guests to set an appointment first before visiting the ongoing exhibitions. For inquiries, kindly send White Walls Gallery a message via DM.
