One of the pillars of Philippine Abstract Expressionism, Edwin Wilwayco infuses his works with musicality, cued by the expressionist sensibilities of Kandinsky, and the compositional cadence of Mozart, after whose seminal work Eine Kleine Nachtmusik the collection is made and named.

Wilwayco is a composer on canvas, known for his sprightly compositions that comprise layers and strokes that meld and clash in rich timbres. In his series ‘Color in Between’, the artist orchestrates his own masterpieces in gradations of blues and reds. Impassioned sweeps of color are punctuated with light strokes and speckles, and recall the ensemble piece’s four movements that capture the waning of day into evening, and we are drawn to dreams — from the brisk spirit of ‘Allegro’ to the lulling lyricism of ‘Romanze’ and ‘Menuetto’, and into the enthralling pull of the ‘Finale’.
