After three months of building their technology-based projects focusing on waste management, traffic control, wildlife conservation, disaster mitigation, educational innovation, and others, the remaining 16 school-teams of the 2018 imake.wemake: create. innovate. collaborate. project are set to battle it out for the three top prizes in December.
The project, organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) together with Acer Philippines, is now in its second year of helping students address their community problems through science, technology, and innovation (STI). On December 3-4, the finalists will face the judges to present their projects and determine who will take home the three Youth Innovation Prizes along with Php 50,000 cash prizes.
“We are excited to see how our finalists executed their proposals and what they have accomplished in the span of three months. We received promising project concepts and Acer Philippines was kind enough to provide them with the Cloudprofessor technology that shall power our students’ projects,” said SEI Director Dr. Josette Biyo.
Earlier in September, the 16 teams from Centro Escolar University Manila, College of St. John – Roxas, De La Salle University Integrated School – Laguna, Dr. Yanga’s Colleges, Grace Christian College, Masbate National Comprehensive High School, New Era University, Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus, Philippine Science High School – CAR Campus, Philippine Science High School – Central Luzon Campus, Philippine Science High School – Central Visayas Campus, Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus, Rizal National Science High School, Santa Rosa Science and Technology High School, Taguig Science High School, and Technological Institute of the Philippines Cubao Campus underwent a one-week technical training focusing on microcontrollers, the arduino digital system and the Acer Cloudprofessor. The training concluded with the teams pitching their projects to the Board of Judges composed of University of the Philippines Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute professors Dr. Nestor Tiglao and Engr. Percival Magpantay, and Ateneo de Manila University professor Engr. Carlos Matti Oppus.
“It will surely be a tightly-contested final presentation, which is a great thing for us, as we aim to determine the best projects among the many quality projects this year. Truly, we are proud of how we are able to hone the innate creativity and innovativeness of young Filipinos through this project. We look forward to inspiring more students to turn their ideas into reality through STI,” said Biyo.
Imake.wemake is an innovation competition for senior high school students organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). This year, DOST-SEI partners with ACER Philippines and takes the competition up a notch with the use of ACER CloudProfessor Internet of Things Kit.
16 school-teams were selected to participate in the training/workshop and execute their proposals. The competition, now on its second year, aims to help students address their community problems through science, technology, and innovation.
DOST-SEI and ACER Philippines will award each of the three winners a cash prize of P50,000 and the Youth Innovation Prize.
