The Shape of Hope

Pinto Art Museum proudly presents 20|21, a yearend exhibition that showcases the works of over 100 artists, each of them grappling with the contemporary moment in a visual language reflecting a unique combination of material, thematic, and stylistic preoccupations. Filling the halls of Ilustrado I and II of Gallery 7, the paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works offer a sweeping view of the art scene—from the figurative yearnings of reflecting aspects of the world to the more abstract experiments of essaying interior realities, with some works straddling between these two compulsions.

Curated by Ferdie Montemayor, 20|21 is an off-shoot of the 20|20 show, which captured an atmosphere of caution, as it was the year that saw the cancellation of many exhibitions and directly affected the livelihood of artists. Similar to last year’s objective, this presentation is an avenue for the artists to continue to have a platform for their works amid the pandemic. In light of the downgraded restrictions and the opening of more art venues, this year’s iteration strikes a tone of hope and optimism as the artists move forward and embrace the possibilities of the emerging new normal.

While a yearend show invariably showcases a plurality of visions and voices, the artists—from the up-and-coming to the mid-career to the established—were encouraged to paint or work with a two-by-two-feet format, in order to crystallize their ideas within a compact space. The resulting exhibition presents the pleasing regularity of similarly-sized works juxtaposed side by side, as if windows were simultaneously opened to a multiplicity of realms. More than anything, 20|21 is a community of kindred souls who have come together to affirm that, even in the dark times, the fire of creativity blazes unceasingly and the imagination has the capacity to heal the rifts of being.
